RISE is a small NGO with a big vision; a world in which every child has access to quality education in order to realise their potential. Our mission is to raise the aspirations of young people in India and the UK through quality education, positively impacting their lives so that they can understand their value in the world.
RISE works in rural areas of India, where 2.6 million children have never been to school and 47 million adolescents are out of school. The NGO delivers ‘Yearn to Learn’, a supplementary Bengali literacy intervention programme, free of cost to some of the most disadvantaged children in the state of West Bengal, where 46% of ten year olds are at least 3 years behind their expected reading level. We work predominantly with first generation learners and those most likely to drop out of school. Yearn to Learn has 130 students aged 12-16 who attend government schools but are not at the required literacy level for their age. The literacy curriculum RISE has devised is innovative and interactive and is delivered by teachers who believe in our mission and are determined to help our learners thrive. The programme focuses on three key aims:
- To improve literacy rates and increase school retention
- To empower students to have higher aspirations
- To increase the value of education in the eyes of rural communities
RISE works with some of the most underprivileged children in India, like Sampa Sardar, in the video here. Sampa, her parents, and her 4 brothers and sisters live in a 2 room bamboo house with no electricity and like most families that RISE works with, live on an insufficient income, amounting to as little as Rs 25000 a year. As a first generation learner, education was not a priority for Sampa and her parents however RISE has been successful in encouraging her and our other students to stay at school and continue their education.
